1951 Season Summary

1951 season chart

Johnny Taylor continued as captain-coach for a second season, and was looking to go one better after making the Grand Final in his first season in charge.
But as Glenelg had lost Laurie Taylor to a coaching position in New South Wales, the team was re-arranged, with Don Taylor moving to centre-half-forward to replace his brother and the rapidly improving Brian Wright moving to centre-half-back to fill the hole left by Don Taylor's move.
Furure All-Australian and dual best & fairest winner Neil Davies was recruited from Broken Hill, and after just three games was picked in the state side.
So despite the loss of Laurie Taylor, Glenelg still had a very stong goal to goal line of Colin Churchett (FF), Don Taylor (CHF), Neil Davies (C), Brian Wright (CHB), Ray Hunt (FB), not to mention a pretty handy ruck combination in Allan Crabb and Johnny Taylor.

After losing to eventual premier Port Adelaide at Alberton in round 1, Glenelg won 3 games in a row and then promptly lost 3 games in a row, to be sitting in 5th place on the ladder with a 3-4 win-loss record, and a game behind 4th placed Torrens after round 7.

link to 1951 team photo

Glenelg then won 4 in a row, albeit against the bottom 3 sides (including 2 wins over Norwood at The Parade and at Moonta), so that after round 11 they were sitting in 3rd spot with a 7-4 win-loss record, 2 games and percentage in front of 5th placed West.
Losses to Port and West in the next 2 rounds, brought West Adelaide back level with Glenelg, with Glenelg retaining 4th spot due to a better percentage.

Then Glenelg came storming home, winning their last 5 games, including wins over 2nd side North, 4th side Torrens, and equal 5th side West (to snuff out their finals chances).
After this run of wins Glenelg finished the minor round comfortably in 3rd position with a 12-6 record, 2 games clear of 4th and 3 games clear of 5th.

In the first semi final, Glenelg led at every change and overwhelmed Torrens by 38 points (with Colin Churchett kicking 8 goals to bring up his 100 for the season).
In the preliminary final, North Adelaide pulled away in the third quarter to establish a 17-point lead and kept Glenelg goal-less in the last to win by 25 points.

  • Brian Wright won his first Glenelg best & fairest award.
  • Colin Churchett was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 5th season in a row, was the league's top goalkicker for the 4th year in a row, and kicked 100 goals in a season for the 2nd year in a row - becoming only the 2nd player to achieve this feat, behind Ken Farmer.

1953 Season Summary

1953 season chart

After the departure of Johnny Taylor, Glenelg appointed 23 year old Pat Hall from Norwood as Captain-Coach for the 1953 season.
The team got off to a fast start, winning their first four games all by sizable margins ranging from 47-points to 73-points, and whilst they were undefeated on top of the ladder after 4 rounds, those wins were all against sides that finished in the bottom 4 at the end of the season.

In the next 3 rounds Glenelg played against and lost to sides in the top-4, so the pattern of the season was set.

The top-4 seemed to be set quite early in the season, and Glenelg's place in the top-4 never really looked in jeopardy until the second half of the season when Glenelg started to lose to sides in the bottom-4.

After unexpected late-season losses to Sturt, North and South resulted in Glenelg losing 6 out of 7 matches (with the only win being a surprise 12-point victory against ladder leader Port at Alberton), North had drawn level with Glenelg on the ladder with 1 round remaining, and they were scheduled to play each other in the last round at Kensington Oval - a ground at which Glenelg had only ever won once in 6 attempts.

link to 1953 team photo

Glenelg defeated North by 29 points in this pre-finals elimination match and claimed 4th spot on the ladder with a 9-9 win-loss record, and would face Norwood in the first semi final, whom they had not beaten in their last four attempts, and had never beaten in a final.

Despite being behind all day, the Bays unleashed a withering last quarter burst and overran Norwood in the last 8 minutes to win the first semi final by 24 points.

The following week in the preliminary final against Port Adelaide, Glenelg made the mistake of playing injured players and were never in the game. They were 6 goals down at 1/4 time and 8 goals down at half-time, and lost by 58 points.

  • Neil Davies won his first Glenelg best & fairest award, and was runner-up in the Magarey Medal.
  • Neil Davies became Glenelg's first All-Australian player at the 1953 Australian National Football Carnival held in Adelaide.
  • After spending 1952 mainly at centre-half-forward, Colin Churchett returned to full-foward and was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 6th time with 74 goals.

1959 Season Summary

1959 season chart

In 1959 Neil Davies continued as Captain-Coach for a 2nd season, and after 8 rounds Glenelg were sitting in 5th place on the ladder with a 3-5 win-loss record, already two games and percentagae outside the top-4. But Glenelg's only wins to this point in the season were all against sides in the bottom 3.

That changed in round 9 when Glenelg had their first win against a side in the top-4, West Torrens, who were in 3rd position, and this win narrowed the gap to 4th spot to just one win.

In the next 5 rounds, thanks to a couple of wins against against the bottom two sides (South & North), Glenelg stayed in touch with the top-4, to be in 5th position after 14 rounds with 6 wins - 8 losses, just 1 win behind 4th placed Torrens who they were due to play in the next round.

This round 15 encounter with Torrens was a do-or-die clash, as a loss would leave them 2 games and percentage outide the top-4 with just 3 rounds to play. Glenelg were able to upset West Torrens by 17-points, which drew them level with Torrens on the ladder but with an inferior percentage - but on the downside Neil Davies was carried off during the game with a recurrence of his knee injury.

link to 1959 team photo

Going into round 17, Torrens and Glenelg were locked together on 8 wins each, but because Torrens had the better percentage, then if Glenelg lost to 2nd placed West Adelaide and Torrens defeated 6th placed Norwood, Glenelg's finals chances would be snuffed out - it was a must win game for Glenelg.
In a high scoring game, Glenelg led for most of the day, and triumphed by 20-points, and after Torrens also beat Norwood, Glenelg and Torrens were still tied together on 9 wins, but Torrens had a 1.3% advantage.

Glenelg would need to defeat 7th placed North in the last round to qualify for finals regardless, but if Torrens defeated top side Port, then Glenelg would need to win by a club record margin to eclipse Torrens' percentage.
As it turned out, Torrens lost to Port, and Glenelg defeated North by 12-points, and with 10 wins - 8 losses, Glenelg snuck into 4th spot for the first time in the season, and qualified for their first finals series in 6 years.

The first semi final against Sturt was a close game all day, with Sturt continually sneaking ahead and Glenelg always fighting back to close the gap. Sturt had again sneaked out to an 11 point lead with just 3 minutes remaining in the last quarter, but two spectacular marks and goals from full-forward Fred Pemberton late in the game gave Glenelg a 1 point victory.
In the preliminary final, Glenelg were defeated by eventual premier Port Adelaide by 59 points.

  • Fred Pemberton topped the club's goalkicking with 44 goals.
  • Colin Richens won his first club best & fairest award.
  • Glenelg won the night premiership in the pre-season competition - The Advertiser Cup
  • The club won both the Junior Colts and Senior Colts premierships - for the Junior Colts, it was their second in a row.

1964 Season Summary

1964 season chart

1964 saw the introduction into league ranks of two new teams - Central Districts and Woodville - for the first time since Glenelg was admitted in 1921.
Glenelg appointed triple Magarey medallist Len Fitzgerald as coach, and Harry Kernahan as captain.

With a new coach, new captain and two new teams to beat up on, Glenelg's fortunes showed a marked improvement from the previous season.
Although getting off to a poor start, with a draw and 2 losses in the first 3 rounds, recording the club's first ever 100-point win in round 4 against newbie Centrals kick-started their season, with Glenelg going on to win 8 of their next 9 games - including a 9-point come-from-behind win against ladder leaders South Adelaide in round 9, and a 46-point win over 3rd placed Norwood in round 10.

After 12 rounds Glenelg had risen to 3rd spot on the ladder with 8 wins - 3 losses - 1 draw. In the last 8 rounds, Glenelg lost to fellow finalists Port, Sturt & South, but as these were Glenelg's only losses, this was enough to secure fourth spot on the ladder with 12 wins - 6 losses - 2 draws.

Glenelg and Sturt met in the first semi final - in both teams' first finals appearance since their epic clash in the 1959 first semi final.
In another thrilling and eerily similar encounter, Sturt had opened up a 17 point lead with nine minutes remaining in the last quarter. But Glenelg had fought back to within 5 points, and with two minutes to go, McGowan kicked the ball in to Button who marked a metre out from the behind post - but the umpire awarded a contentious free against McGowan for running too far (as can be seen in this short video) and Sturt held on to win by 5 points.

  • New recruits Colin Rice and Brian McGowan had an immediate impact in their first season at the club. Rice won the club's best & fairest award, while McGowan was the club's top goalkicker with 54 goals.
  • Future star Fred Phillis won the thirds best & fairest award.

1967 Season Summary

1967 season chart

1967 began a new era at the Glenelg Football Club with the appointment of Neil Kerley as Captain-Coach, and a new look, with the adoption of the black guernsey with a gold sash across the front.
Kerley brought a new level of commitment and professionalism to the club, at all levels, both on and off the field. He had already coached West and South to premierships - their first premierships for 14 and 26 years respectively - and had taken South from bottom in 1963 (which is where Glenelg finished in 1966) to top in 1964 in his first year as coach.

Kerley had an immediate impact, beating North Melbourne in a trial match, and opening the season with 4 consecutive wins - three of them by over 10 goals (admittedly all against teams who finished in the bottom 3), including a 100 point win over Woodville in his very first match in charge (only the club's 2nd ever 100 point win).

But after this initial honeymoon period against the weaker sides was over, reality set in as they started meeting better opposition and Glenelg lost their next 4 games, to be one game outside the final four on 4 wins - 4 losses after 8 rounds.

After a round 12 thumping at the hands of Port Adelaide, Glenelg's season was at the cross roads, sitting outside the top-4 on 6 wins - 6 losses, 1 game behind 4th placed Norwood, who they were due to play in the next round.
Half of their remaining 8 matches would be against top-4 sides, and only one against the bottom two sides who were the only teams already out of finals contention, so if they were to make the finals they were going to have to earn it.

link to 1967 photo of kerley addressing his players

In round 13, they had a critical 36-point win over 4th placed Norwood at The Parade which lifted them back into the top-4 on percentage.

Then in round 17 they needed to defeat 2nd side North to prevent Norwood from displacing them in the top-4. After only kicking 1 goal and trailing by 27-points at half time, Glenelg kept North to 1 goal in the 2nd half to run out winners by 4-points.

After a loss to West in round 18 left them in equal 4th place with South and Norwood (but ahead on percentage), they faced the intimidating prospect of needing to defeat Sturt at Unley Oval in round 19 or face the prospect of dropping out of the top-4 once again. Glenelg responded with an emphatic 53-point drubbing of league leading Sturt, which kept them in 4th spot, but still needing to defeat Norwood in the last round or hope that South lost to Port.

In the last round Glenelg defeated Norwood for the 3rd time in the season, to finish the minor round in 4th spot with 12 wins & 8 losses - 1 game and percentage in front of 5th placed South.

Unfortunately in a rugged first semi final against Port Adelaide, Glenelg finished with just 17 fit men (two went to hospital) and were blown away by 46 points. This was the the third time that Port had ended Glenelg's season prematurely after preliminary final defeats in 1953 & 1959.

  • Glenelg changed to its jumper to a black guernsey with a gold sash at the front.
  • As well as being Captain-Coach, Neil Kerley also won the club's best & fairest award.
  • Ray Button & Bob Anesbury tied for the top goalkicking honours with 45 goals each, and Ray Button kicked 11 goals in the round 1 demolition of Woodville.
  • Peter Marker, Rex Voigt, Kerry Hamilton, Wayne Phillis & Graham Cornes all made their league debuts in 1967 - setting the foundations for future success.
  • The reserves won their first ever premiership, and the thirds won just their second premiership (after losing only one game for the year).

1976 Season Summary

1976 season chart

In 1976 Neil Kerley continued into his 10th (and last) season as coach, and Peter Marker was captain for the 6th consectutive year - both club records.
Despite substantial list changes caused by the departures of Greg Bennett, Bob Tardiff, Kerry Hamilton, Peter Anderson & Bob Treganza from the club, Glenelg still remained a genuine premiership contender.

Smarting from their unexpected grand final loss in 1975, Glenelg were on top of the ladder and undefeated after the first 5 rounds, which included comprehensive victories of 58 points against Sturt in round 1, our biggest ever win of 88 points against Port in round 2, and a 29 point win against reigning premiers Norwood in round 4 (after kicking 17-26).

Although they remained on top of the ladder until round 10, when they had an 8-2 win-loss record, they suffered from massive fluctuations in form for the rest of the minor round. After round 10 they could not string together more than 2 wins in a row.

From round 11 onwards, apart from a 20-point loss to Port, their other 4 losses were all by atleast 37 points, and their 6 wins were all by atleast 40 points... with no close matches.

link to 1976 team photo

In fact 7 times during the season thre was a turnaround of atleast 13 goals from one meeting against a club to the next meeting against that club. A good example is, against Sturt they went from 58 point winners in round 1, to 47 point losers in round 11, to 82 point winners in round 21. Glenelg's inconsistency saw them finish the minor round in 3rd position with 14 wins & 7 losses.

In the finals, they beat Sturt in the qualifying final by 23 points, lost to Port in the second semi final by 43 points, and then faced Sturt again in the preliminary final - whom they had defeated twice in the previous 3 weeks by 82 points & 23 points.

Unfortunately the preliminary final did not go to plan, and after missing countless opportunities to establish a match winning lead, Sturt came back from 19 points behind at 3/4 time to inflict a gut-wrenching 7 point loss.

The repercussions of this humiliating loss were severe, with Neil Kerley resigning as coach after 10 years in the job.

  • Fred Phiilis was the club's top goalkicker for the 7th time with 104 goals, including 12 in a match against Sturt in round 21 at Football Park.
  • Fred Phillis was also the league's top goalkicker again - for the 5th time.
  • 19 year old Paul Weston won his first club best & fairest award, and came 3rd in the Magarey medal.
  • Brian Colbey's career was cut short at 29 due to a serious achilles tendon injury.

1978 Season Summary

1978 season chart

With John Nicholls at the helm as coach for his 2nd year, and Graham Cornes appointed captain (with Peter Marker under an injury cloud and the reirement of Wayne Phillis), the 1978 season began in sensational fashion against South at the Bay in round 1. Only 6 points up at 3/4 time, Fred Phillis, who had returned to full-forward after spending 1977 at full-back, kicked 7 goals in the last quarter - finishing with 10 all up - and the Bays ran out winners by 53 points.

After a 74-point win over Port Adelaide in round 4, Glenelg were undefeated and top of the table, leading into a round 5 clash against an also undefeated Sturt at the Bay - but they were humbled to the tune of 42 points, and were relegated to 2nd on the ladder.
From rounds 6 to 11, Glenelg won their next 6 in a row, to be on 10 wins - 1 loss, still in 2nd spot on the ladder and only percentage behind top side Sturt.

After belting bottom side North Adelaide at Prospect in round 15 by 122 points - with Kym Hodgeman picking up 52 touches and kicking 7.3 - they were still 2nd with a 12-3 record and three games in front of Norwood in 3rd spot.

Then something strange happened...they lost their ability to score. Up to round 15, Glenelg averaged 116 points per match, but in the next four matches they averaged just 51 points per match, and comfortably lost all four matches. There were signs of life in the round 20 loss to South (their 5th loss in a row) where they managed to kicked 15 goals, and then won their last 2 matches to cling onto 3rd spot and the double chance in the finals with a 14-8 record.

But in the finals they were eliminated in straight sets, losing to Norwood by 54 points in the qualifying final, and Port by 12 points in the first semi final - after being 28 points up at three-quarter-time. This was the first time in Glenelg's history where they had the double chance in the finals and couldn't win a single final.
Also of note is that Kym Hodgeman was unavailable for the first semi final after getting injured at training.

  • Kym Hodgeman had a sensational season - winning his 2nd club best & fairest award and winning the Magarey medal.
  • Kym Hodgeman was also the club's leading goalkicker with 54 goals, with Fred Phillis 2nd on 53 goals, and Stephen Copping 3rd on 50 goals - Hodgeman became only the 3rd player, after Frank Burt in 1945 and Neil Davies in 1956 to win both the best & fairest and top goalkicking honours in the same season.
  • Fred Phillis became Glenelg's greatest ever goalkicker, surpassing Jack Owen's career goal tally of 827 goals for the club.

1980 Season Summary

1980 season chart

With John Halbert at the helm for his 2nd year as coach, and Paul Weston as captain for a 2nd season, Glenelg showed a massive improvement from the previous disappointing season.

After 6 rounds Glenelg were on top of the ladder with a 5-1 win-loss record and a percentage of 62.5%, but round 7 delivered a reality check in the form of a 51-point defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide.

From there Glenelg went on a 9 match winning streak, starting with a 43-point win at home against Sturt in round 8, and ending in a 24-point win over ladder leader Port Adelaide at Glenelg Oval in round 16. This put Glenelg back on top of the premiership ladder for the first time since round 6, with a 14-2 win-loss record, but Port were still lurking in 2nd spot just half a game behind.

Glenelg's time at the top of the ladder was short lived, as they lost to Sturt by 11-points at Unley the following round. This put Port back on top of the ladder, and even though Glenelg won their last 5 minor round games, so did Port Adelaide, which kept Glenelg in 2nd position with 19 wins - 3 losses, half a game behind Port and a whopping 6 wins in front of Sturt in 3rd.

Despite this minor round dominance of winning 86% of their matches (2nd only to 95% in 1973), somehow, Glenelg were eliminated from the finals race in straight sets, with two comprehensive losses - to Sturt by 29 points, and Norwood by 37 points - and this was a side which, for the second season in a row had the equal most All-Australian representatives of any club in Australia, including the VFL.

  • Paul Weston won his 2nd club best & fairest award, at just 23 years of age, but Kym Hodgeman came 3rd in the Magarey medal.
  • 20 year old Robbie Walter was the club's leading goalkicker with 78 goals.
  • Graham Cornes won the Tassie medal in the state of origin carnival held in Adelaide.
  • Glenelg once again had three players selected in the All-Australian side - Graham Cornes, Peter Carey & Keith Kuhlmann - after the state of origin carnival held in Adelaide in October, and once again, along with Richmond this was the equal most of any club in Australia.
  • 1980 also marked the end of John H Ellers' 13 year reign as President of the Glenelg Football Club.

1984 Season Summary

1984 season chart

Graham Campbell and Peter Carey continued as Glenelg coach and captain respectively (both for their 2nd season), but the team got off to a slow start, losing 2 of their first three matches.

But from round 4 onwards, Glenelg won 16 of their last 19 matches - losing only to Port twice & Norwood once - to finish equal top with Port Adelaide on 17 wins, 5 losses. And Glenelg were competitive in every game that they played, with their biggest loss being just 25 points.

After 8 consecutive wins from rounds 8 to 15, Glenelg were equal top of the ladder, but second to Port by just 6 goals worth of percentage.
Then after round 19, Glenelg were in fact top on percentage, but in the last 3 rounds Port Adelaide had bigger wins than what Glenelg did, and Glenelg were kept in 2nd on percentage.

Glenelg had a comfortable 48 point win against Centrals in the qualifying final, but in a spiteful match four players were reported, including captain Peter Carey who was best on ground. In a crushing blow to Glenelg's premiership aspirations, Carey was suspended for 2 matches for attempted striking.

link to 1984 player profiles

Without their captain (and best player from the quaifying final), Glenelg subsequently lost the second semi final to Port by 39 points, and the preliminary final to Norwood by 18 points - after kicking themselves out of the game with 11-23.

  • Stephen Kernahan won the Glenelg best & fairest award for the 2nd year in a row, and was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the second year in a row with 56 goals. In doing so, he became the first player to win the best & fairest award and be top goalkicker in the same season TWICE. Frank Burt, Neil Davies & Kym Hodgeman had all previously done this once.
  • Stephen Kernahan won the Fos Williams medal for best player against Victoria at Football Park - kicking 10 goals in the match.
  • Stephen Copping kicked 11 goals in a match against Sturt at Unley in round 14.

1989 Season Summary

1989 season chart

Graham Cornes continued into his 5th year as coach, and Chris McDermott took over the captaincy after the retirement of Peter Carey, but as he had injured his left knee in an exhibition game for South Australia against Western Australia in Vancouver he could not play until half way through the season, and Scott Salisbury deputised as captain until his return.

The loss of Carey & McDermott, was compounded by the retirements of Alan & Wayne Stringer, the transfers of David Grenvold to Essendon, Geoff Winton & Craig Woodlands to South, and long term injuries to John Schneebichler, Craig Budarick and Gary Christie.

As a result Glenelg struggled in the first half of the season, and after a 117 point flogging by Port at Alberton in round 11, were sitting in 6th spot with 4 wins & 7 losses - 1 game and percentage behind 5th placed West, who they were due to play in the next round. This "double point" game against West at Richmond proved to be the turning point in the season, as it was the beginning of 5 consecutive wins which got Glenelg back into the top five.

One cause for concern though was that Glenelg had been accustomed over the last decade to having a number of big wins each season, and so far during 1989 their biggest win was just 35 points and their percentage was just 48%.

Finally though the big wins, and the resulting confidence and momentum came, by 85 points over Torrens in round 18, and 132 points over Sturt in round 22 - and expectations started to build that Glenelg might still be a legitimate premiership contender, rather than just making up the finals numbers.

For the third season in a row Glenelg had to start their finals campaign via the elimination final... could they once again make it all the way to Grand Final, as they had done in the previous two seasons?

In a gladiatorial elimination final against Norwood, the lead changed 10 times during the match, and 6 times during a frantic last quarter. Tony Symonds had the chance to kick a goal from the boundary line deep into time-on of the last quarter, which would have put Glenelg back in front, but the swirling winds took the ball out of bounds and Norwood hung on to win an epic contest by 5 points.

  • Kym Hodgeman won his 3rd club best & fairest award.
  • Jim West was the club's top goalkicker with 60 goals.

1993 Season Summary

1993 season chart

After the abrupt departure of Kym Hodgeman, Mark Williams was appointed coach, and Nick Chigwidden was appointed captain after the retirement of Scott Salisbury.

Glenelg were entrenched in the top 3 of the premiership ladder for most of the season, and had some impressive wins, including a 73 point drubbing of eventual premiers Woodville-West Torrens in round 2, and an 84 point belting of top of the table Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval in round 16 (inspired by Mark Williams' return to his old stomping ground as opposition coach for the first time).
So after 16 rounds, Glenelg were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a 9-4-1 record, 1.5 games from top spot and 2.5 games inside the top 5.

The remainder of the minor round was a mixture of losses against top 5 sides and comfortable wins against bottom 3 sides, to finish the minor round in 3rd place with a 12-7-1 record.

Losses to a Scott Hodges inpired Port Adelaide by 34 points in the Qualifying Final and a narrow 10 point loss to Norwood in the First Semi-Final meant that Glenelg were eliminated from the finals in straight sets - for just the third time after 1978 & 1980.
Of note is that Glenelg were the only team that the eventual premiers, Woodville-West Torrens did not beat during the year.

  • Nick Chigwidden won his 3rd club best & fairest award, and was runner-up in the Magarey medal.
  • John Fidge was the club's top goalkicker for the 3rd time with 56 goals.

1994 Season Summary

1994 season chart

1994 saw both Mark Williams and Nick Chigwidden continue in their roles as coach & captain for a second season, and despite qualifying for finals it was a very disappointing season for the team.

Glenelg had a five match winning streak to get them into third spot on the ladder with a 6 win - 3 loss record, and a 3 game break over 6th placed Sturt after 10 rounds.

But this was followed by a horror stretch of 6 consecutive losses including two 100 point losses at Glenelg Oval in consecutive weeks - the first time this had happened in the history of the club.
After 17 rounds, this left Glenelg in 2nd-last position on the ladder with the worst percentage in the league, two games in front of bottom placed Sturt, but still only 1 game and percentage out of the top 5.

Fortunately they did get their act together in the last part of the season, winning 4 out of their last 7 games (with their only losses being respectable losses against the top 3 sides). However, overall Glenelg spent 40% of the season outside the top 5, and only fell into fifth spot after North lost to Norwood in the last minor round match while Glenelg looked on with the bye.

Glenelg finished the minor round with 10 wins, 12 losses and a woeful percentage of 46.5%, and lost the elimination final by 44 points to Norwood.

  • Nick Chigwidden won his 4th club best & fairest award.
  • Dean Caldow was the club's top goalkicker with 37 goals.

1999 - 4th

1999 Season Summary

1999 season chart

After 4 years in the doldrums where finals participation never looked a remote possibility in the second half of each season, 1999 provided a ray of hope that the Bays might be on the way back towards being premiership contenders again. Tony McGuinnes continued into his 2nd season as coach and Nick Chigwidden was captain for a record equalling 7th season.

In the first part of the season, Glenelg showed a significant improvement from previous seasons, sitting in 2nd position with a 6-3 win-loss record after 11 rounds, but this was followed by 3 consecutive losses, which left them sitting in 7th place, just percentage out of the top 5.

However it was the last part of the season where encouraging signs emerged that the Bays might be back as legitimate contenders.
They won 7 of their last 8 matches, including impressive wins over 2nd placed Norwood at Norwood Oval, 3rd placed Woodville-West Torrens at Woodville Oval, and a 50 point demolition of top side Port at Glenelg Oval.

Glenelg finished the minor round in 3rd place with a 13-7 win-loss record, and having beaten the other major premiership contenders in the run to the finals, gave hope that Glenelg were a genuine premiership threat.
However, Glenelg's poor finals run since the 1992 grand final continued, losing their 5th & 6th consecutive finals matches (albeit narrowly), to again be eliminated from the finals race in straight sets.
In the Qualifying Final against Woodville-West Torrens, they surrended a 23 point half-time lead to eventually lose by 11 points, and in the First Semi-Final against Norwood they lost by by 14 points after leading by 9 points 3/4 time.

  • Richard Kelly won the club's best & fairest award.
  • Ben McEntee was the club's top goalkicker with 28 goals, with Chad Cornes coming 2nd on 20 goals.
  • Nick Chigwidden was runner-up in the Magarey medal for the 2nd time.
  • One interesting aspect of the 1999 season was that it was Glenelg's best defensive season ever. They conceded just 69 points per game, and it remained their best defensive season until 2019. It was also just the third season (after 1985 & 1986) that they had the best defence in the league (on a points coneceded per game basis).

2007 Season Summary

2007 season chart

In 2007 Mark Mickan and Ben Mules continued in their roles as coach and captain for a second season, but the team got off to a very slow start, sitting in last position on the ladder with a 1 win - 6 loss record after round 9.
Although part of the reason for the slow start was due to the draw, where Glenelg had to play at Unley, Elizabeth, Noarlunga and Norwood in the first 7 rounds, losing to eventual wooden-spooner West at the Bay didn't help either.

However the Queen's Birthday clash against North Adelaide in round 10 saw the beginnings of a turnaround, convincingly beating them by 48 points, followed by a massive win of 132 points against West, which was Glenelg's biggest and only win of 100 points or more against any club for 12 seasons.

In fact after round 9, Glenelg only lost 2 more matches in the minor round - to Centrals at home and Woodville-West Torrens away - as well as securing draws at Alberton (after 14 consecutive losses) and Woodville (after 8 consecutive losses).
Glenelg quailfied for finals action for the first time since 1999, finishing in 5th position with 10 wins, 8 losses & 2 draws.

link to 2007 team photo

Glenelg faced Sturt in the elimination final, and despite the fact that they were in form, and had defeated Sturt in 2 out of 3 meetings during the season, the fact remained that Glenelg had lost 6 consecutive finals dating back to the 1992 grand final.
In the elimination final, Glenelg started slowly and trailed Sturt for the entire match until well into the last quarter when they finally hit the lead. They hung on to win by 1 point, thanks to a late miss from 20m out by Sturt's Simon Feast which would have snatched Sturt the game.

In the first semi final against Woodville-West Torrens, Glenelg again got off to a slow start, trailing by 22 points at quarter time, but fought back in the second term, and should have led at half time, but for some ill-discipline gifting the Eagles a goal just before the siren to give them a 6-8 to 6-3 lead at the main break. Thanks to poor kicking for goal by Glenelg in the third term the Eagles pulled away to lead by 19 points at three-quarter-time, but Glenelg fought back in the last and with a minute to go the scores were level. Unfortunately the Eagles had a bit of luck when a soccered kick was marked by an Eagles player, who then kicked the goal, and Glenelg went down by 6 points.
Overall, due to the strong finish to the season, 2007 was a very encouraging season with a lot to look forward to in 2008.

  • Ben Kane won the club's best & fairest award.
  • Justin McConnell was the club's top goalkicker with 64 goals.

2010 Season Summary

2010 season chart

2010 was another season (just like 2009) that promised so much but delivered so little.
After an inconsistent start to the season which included a 76 point win and a 67 point loss to the same team in the space of just 6 matches, Glenelg were in 5th place on the ladder with a 3-3 win-loss record after 7 rounds.

But then things clicked into gear, and they won 12 of their next 13 matches, so that Glenelg were on top of the ladder heading into the last minor round match against Centrals at Elizabth - needeing to win or draw to secure their third straight minor premiership.
Alas, they lost by 25 points in a low scoring game, and had to settle for 2nd spot on percentage to Centrals, both with 15 wins & 5 losses. This is probably where they belonged, having lost all 3 encounters with top side Centrals, but having a 15 win, 2 loss record against the rest of the competition - and 10 of those 15 wins were comfortable wins of 5 goals or more.

link to 2010 team photo

But in probably their equal worst finals performance ever (along with 1980), Glenelg got smashed in their two finals - Norwood by 44 points, and Woodville-West Torrens by 38 points - to be eliminated from the finals race in straight sets for the 2nd year in a row.
During the minor round, they had played against Norwood & the Eagles a combined 5 times for 4 wins (of 76, 39, 33 & 30 points), and 1 loss (of 67 points) - a quite inexplicable turnaround.

Over the course of 2009 & 2010, Glenelg's minor round record was 32 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw (81.3% win rate), but in finals their record was 0 wins, 4 losses (0% win rate) - and in fact, their record in the minor round against those sides they couldn't beat in the finals was 7 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw (75% win rate).

  • Mark Mickan and Ben Mules were coach and captain again, for a 5th consecutive season.
  • Ty Allen won his 2nd club best & fairest award, and was 3rd in the Magarey medal.
  • Todd Grima was the club's top goalkicker with 58 goals, and also won the Ken Farmer medal for leading goalkicker in the league during the minor round.
  • Glenelg won their 2nd consecutive Under 18s premiership (and their third junior premiership in a row after also winning the Under 19s flag in 2008).

2011 - 5th

2011 Season Summary

2011 season chart

2011 was the beginning of another decline in Glenelg's fotunes, as although they qualified for the finals, they were no longer a genuine premiership contender as they had been in the previous 3 seasons.
Mark Mickan began the year as league coach (for the 6th consecutive season), but was replaced during the season by reserves coach Kris Massie, while Ben Mules continued as captain for a 6th season.

The season began with a magnificent come from behind victory against Sturt in round 1, coming back from 41 points down at three quarter time to win by 19 points. But they were unable to back that up the following round and in the early part of the season Glenelg were unable to string consecutive wins together, resulting in them sitting in 5th position with a 4-3 record after 8 rounds - a game and a healthy percentage in front of 6th placed South.

link to 2011 team photo

Unforunately their next 5 matches only brought a draw and 4 losses, including a 93 point belting by Centrals in round 12 which brought about the end of Mark Mickan's reign as coach. So after 13 rounds Glenelg were ouside the top five, in 6th position on the ladder, with 4 wins, 7 losses & 1 draw, and under the guidance of reserevs coach, Kris Massie.
Massie's 2nd, 3rd & 4th games as coach produced 3 wins in a row, which included a nail biting 2 point win over eventual premier Woodville-West Torrens. So after round 17, Glenelg were back up to 4th place on the ladder 1.5 games in front of 6th placed Port.

But from there Glenelg's season fell away, only having two wins (against sides in the bottom 3), and three losses, including a 107 point belting at the hands of the Eagles.
This was enough to limp into the finals in 4th position with 9 wins, 10 losses & 1 draw, but against South Adelaide in the elimination final they lost by 31 points - their first ever loss to South in a final, and their 6th consecutive finals loss since the 2008 preliminary final.

  • Ben Kane won his 2nd club best & fairest award.
  • Ruory Kirkby was the club's top goalkicker for the 2nd time with 39 goals.
  • Glenelg won their 6th reserves premiership.
  • The Elimination Final loss continued the unfortunate trend of poor Glenelg Finals performances. From the 1992 Grand Final to Now, Glenelg had lost 14 out of their last 16 finals - the only wins being the 2007 Elimination Final and the 2008 Preliminary Final, both against Sturt.

2020 Season Summary

2020 season chart

2020 was a season like no other.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season start was delayed until late June, the minor round was reduced to 14 rounds, Adelaide & Port Adelaide did not participate in order to quarantine the SANFL players from possible AFL COVID contamination, and the finals were reduced to a top 4.

The league side suffered a large turnover of players from the previous season, as 3 premiership players retired (Josh Scott, Jesse White, Aaron Joseph), 2 were lost to the AFL (Brad Close, Will Gould), and 3 suffered long term injuries - resulting in only 12 players from the 2019 premiership team playing in the last game of the 2020 season.

link to 2020 team photo

After a very tough start to the season, involving 2 narrow wins followed by 3 narrow losses, Glenelg were mid-table after 5 of the 14 rounds. Three wins from the next four games had them sitting in 4th position just 1 game in fromt of 5th placed Norwood with a crucial clash against 2nd side North at Prospect next on the agenda.

A critical 2-point win against North kept Glenelg a game ahead of Norwood with 4 rounds to play. In the last 4 rounds, Norwood fell away with just 1 more win, and Glenelg won 3 of their last 4 to finish the minor round with a 9-5 win-loss record - 3 games clear of Norwood in 5th place - but that loss was an ominous 78 point belting at the hands of Woodville-West Torrens - our biggest loss for 3 seasons.
In the First Semi-final against South, they always had our measure, we trailed by over 5 goals early in the third quarter, and never really made any headway, always trailing by atleast 3 goals and eventually losing by 25 points.

Whilst they did achieve their first wins at Norwood and Unley Ovals for the first time since 2011 & 2012 respectively, and won at Elizabeth for just the 2nd time in a decade, they only won half of their matches at Glenelg Oval, and 4 of their 9 wins during the season were by less than a goal.
Fourth place was a fair reflection on where they belonged - having a 2-4 record against the finals sides, and a 7-1 record against the non-finals sides.

  • Mark Stone continued as coach, Max Proud became captain as Chris Curran was not expected to be available for the 2020 season.
  • Matthew Snook won his 3rd Glenelg best & fairest award - becoming the 11th player to win it on 3 or more occasions.
  • Liam McBean won the Glenelg top goalkicking honour for the 3rd time - becoming the 10th player to do this on atleast 3 occasions.
  • Liam McBean also won the Ken Farmer Medal for leading SANFL goalkicker in the minor round for the 2nd time in a row - becoming the 4th Glenelg player after Jack Owens, Colin Churchett & Fred Phillis to win multiple SANFL Leading Goalkicker or Ken Farmer Medals.

2022 Season Summary

2022 season chart

In 2022 Brett Hand and Max Proud continued as coach and captain respectively, and despite the fact that Glenelg's round 1 side had 9 changes to the 2021 grand final side, the season got off to a good start with 4 tight wins, all against good sides - including wins at Unley and Woodville ovals, and a comeback win from 40 points down at half time against Adelaide.
Two narrow losses by 3 points and 2 points, were followed by 5 consecutive wins, leaving Glenelg with a 9-2 win loss record, a percentage of 56.6%, in 2nd spot on the ladder just percentage off top spot, and shaping up as a genuine premiership contender.

However, in the middle of that 5 game winning streak was an event that effectively reduced Glenelg from a genuine premiership contender to an also ran - the AFL mid-season draft. After round 8, Glenelg lost a key mid-fielder and a key defender for the rest of the season, when Brett Turner and Sam Durdin were drafted to Adelaide and Carlton respectively.

In the last 7 rounds, Glenelg only won 3 matches, including 2 unconvincing narrow wins against the bottom 2 sides, and 3 of the 4 losses were by more than 7 goals. They finished the minor round in 4th spot, surprisingly only 1 match off top spot, but with a vastly inferior percentage. After defeating Sturt in the Elimination Final by 16 points, they lost to eventual premier Norwood by 28 points in the First-Semi final.

  • Max Proud won his second best & fairest award.
  • Lachie Hosie was the club's top goalkicker for the first time with 44 goals.
  • Liam McBean was named captain of the state side in the match against WA.
  • Sam Durdin won the Bob Quinn Medal for best on ground in the ANZAC day match.
  • The Under 18s won the premiership, and the Under 16s were runners up.
  • Kyle Crompton won the Reserves Magarey Medal, Ben Ridgeway won the McCallum Tonkins Medal in the Under 18s, and Jessica Bates won the SANFL Women's League Best & Fairest award.
