1926 Season Summary

1926 season chart

Whilst 1924 was the year where Glenelg began to build the nucleus of a league standard squad (with the debuts of Jack Owens, Len Sallis, John Lloyd & Cyril Hoft), and 1925 was the year that Glenelg won their first game and continued to build their list (with the debuts of Jim Handby, Jack Sexton & Clem Hill), 1926 was the year where the first green shoots of improvement began to show as Glenelg got off the bottom of the ladder for the first time.

Whilst the 1926 season got off to a slow start with 4 convincing losses, round 5 showed a substantial improvemnet when they just ran out of time to overrun North in the last quarter and lost by just 8-points.
Then a breakthrough win in round 6 against winless South, was followed by a tenacious 4-point win against reigning premier Norwood the following round, and a 6-point win against West Torrens in round 8 (the team who had thrashed them by 10-goals in round 1), to give them 3 consecutive wins for the first time, and only their 5th win in their history.
So after 8 rounds Glenelg were on 3 wins - 5 losses, only 1.5 games outside the top-4, and for the first time still in finals contention with 6 rounds remaining.

link to 1926 team photo

Their improved form was maintained for the next 3 matches, losing to West by 28-points (after getting to within 6-points early in the last quarter), then losing to 2nd side Port by just 6-points, before defeating a still win-less South in round 11 by 27-points.
However, improved form aside, this left Glenelg 3 games and percentage outside the top-4 with just 3 rounds remaining, so their finals dream was effectively over.

Whilst the season finished in disappointing fashion with 3 consecutive losses, Glenelg had climbed off the bottom of the ladder for the first time, finishing in 7th position on the ladder with 4 wins - 10 losses, and a percentage above 40% for the first time - a small step, but first steps usually are..

  • After joining the club from South Adelaide in 1925, Jim Handby was appointed captain-coach for the 1926 season.
  • Len Sallis won his first Glenelg best and fairest award.
  • Jack Owens kicked 64 goals and was Glenelg's top goal kicker for the 3rd season in a row.
  • Jack Owens was also the league leading goalkicker at the end of the minor round (and was acknowledged as the leading goalkicker in the newspapers of the time, even though he was passed by Norwood's Roy Bent in the finals).
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1926 season were Jim Handby, Len Sallis, Cyril Hoft, Jack Owens & Charles Drew.

1927 - 7th

1927 Season Summary

1927 season chart

1927 was the first year that Glenelg were a consistently competitive side, but it didn't show up on the premiership ladder because of a number of narrow losses.
Led by Jack Owens with an SANFL record 80 goals, for the first time Glenelg were no longer the lowest scoring team in the league.

But because they won only 1 of their first 7 games, they were never in the finals hunt, and finished 7th with 4 wins - 13 losses, 6 games outside the top-4.
And the reason for their lowly finish was that they lost 5 games by less than a goal which they probably should have won, and another 3 games by 19-points or less.

There were six games which they lost, but possibly could have or should have won ...

  • In round 2, Glenelg were down by 10-ponts to Torrens at 3/4 time, and had a multitude of opportunities in the last quarter but only kicked 1-7 to lose by just 5-points.
  • In round 4, Glenelg were down by 18-points to Sturt at 3/4 time, but lost by 1-point when Jack Owens only registered a point with the last scoring shot of the match.
  • In round 9, Glenelg came from 27-points down to Port at 3/4 time to be within 3-points, and would have hit the front when Cyril Hoft kicked a goal in the last minute, but a contentious free (against Hoft for juggling the ball) saw the goal disallowed, resulting in a 3-point loss.
  • In round 10, Glenelg led Sturt by 19-points at 3/4 time, but after only kicking 0-4 in the last quarter, left the door open for Sturt to kick two goals in the last 3 minutes to steal victory from Glenelg by 4-points.
  • In round 13, Glenelg led Norwood by 21-points at 3/4 time, but lost by 5-points.
  • In round 17, Glenelg were level with eventual premiers West at 3/4 time, but lost by 10-points after only kicking 0-5 in the last quarter.
link to 1927 team photo

If they had won all six of those games, then they would have finished in 3rd place, a game in front of Torrens in 5th, but even winning 4 out of those 6 matches would have doubled their previous best season tally of 4 wins and had them in finals contention for the entire season.

Looking at the talent thay had available with 8 gun players in Jim Handby, Len Sallis, Cyril Hoft, Jack Sexton, Gordon Barbary, Jack Lloyd, Blue johnston, Jack Owens, it is not wishful thinking that they could have played finals.
Between them they would finish with 3 magarey medals and 13 Glenelg best & fairest awards (to 5 different players), not to mention 827 goals from Jack Owens.
In fact looking at that talent it is hard to believe that they didn't play finals - I guess the only caveat is that a number these players were early in their careers (Johnston in his 1st year, Barbary & Sexton in their 2nd/3rd) and hadn't yet reached the peak of their powers.

  • Jim Handby continued as captain-coach for the 2nd season in a row.
  • John 'Jack' Lloyd won his first Glenelg best and fairest award.
  • Jack Owens kicked 80 goals and was Glenelg's top goal kicker for the 4th season in a row.
  • Jack Owens was also the league leading goalkicker with the highest goal tally recorded since 1893.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1927 season were Jack Owens, Gordon Barbary, John Lloyd, Cyril Hoft, Jim Handby, Len Sallis, Jack Sexton & 'Blue' Johnston.

1929 - 7th

1929 Season Summary

1929 season chart

In 1929 Glenelg got off to its best ever start to a season by winning their first 3 games. They had their first ever win against West Adelaide by 5-points in round 1, followed by an 8-point win against West Torrens at Thebarton Oval (both of these opponents were eventual finalists), then followed up with a 13-point victory against eventual wooden-spooner South Adelaide in round 3.
Considering that their previous best season yielded just 4 wins in total, having won their first 3 was a monumental improvement, and hopes were high that this would be the year that they would make the finals for the first time

Losses in the next two rounds brought them back to earth, but another win against Torrens in round 6, had Glenelg sitting in 4th spot on the ladder with a 4-2 record, equal with 2nd placed Norwood & 3rd placed Sturt, and a game in front of 5th placed West.

The round 7 encounter with Sturt was a real inflection point in Glenelg's season… win and they would jump to 3rd, lose and they could fall out of the top-4. In a tight game against Sturt where the scores were level at half-time, 3/4 time and 5 minutes before the final bell, Glenelg were defeated by 6-points despite having more scoring shots. Glenelg's inaccuracy in front of goal continued to plague them in the following round against West Adelaide, resulting in an 18-point loss (again despite having more scoring shots).

This put Glenelg behind the 8-ball in their chase for a finals berth, as after 8 rounds they were now 1 game outside the top-4 in 5th place on 4 wins - 4 losses, and due to play the top 2 sides (Port & Norwood) in the ensuing rounds.

link to 1929 team photo

However, despite Glenelg losing their next 4 games in a row (all against the top-3 sides), after 12 rounds Glenelg were still in finals contention, sitting in 7th on the ladder with a 4-8 record, but only 1 game behind the equal 4th, 5th & 6th placed teams.
So Glenelg simply had to beat Torrens in round 13 (who were one of those teams) to keep their finals chances alive. Glenelg led at half time, but Torrens dominated the 3rd quarter to establish a 26-point 3/4 time lead, and despite not scoring in the last quarter, held on to defeat Glenelg by 10-points.

This was Glenelg's 7th consecutive loss, and effectively extinguished their finals aspirations, leaving them in 7th place, 2 games and percentage outside the top-4 with just 4 games remaining.

Glenelg finished the season in 7th place with 5 wins - 12 losses, and were 4 games outside the finals - which is the same number of games that they had lost by 10-points or less during the season. Despite the disappointing 2nd half of the season, Glenelg were around the mark, and while 5 wins -12 losses doesn't look impressive, it was still their best season to date.

  • Roy Brown continued as coach for a 2nd season, and was also appointed captain.
  • Jim Handby won his 2nd Glenelg best & fairest award.
  • Jim Handby was runner-up in the Magarey Medal in 1929, after winning it the previous year in 1928 (as well as being among the contenders in 1925 & 1926, and 4th in 1930).
  • Jack Owens was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 6th consecutive season with 72 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1929 season were Jim Handby by a long way to Gordon Barbary, Len Griffiths, 'Blue' Johnston & Len Sallis.

1931 Season Summary

1931 season chart

Prior to this season, Glenelg finished last in their first 5 seasons, and 2nd-last in their next 5 seasons. But in 1931 they finished out of the bottom two for the first time in their history and recorded a club record 7 wins from 17 matches.

In the first 3 rounds Glenelg came up against the top-3 sides, and after a narrow 6-point defeat to Port in round 1, they were trounced in the next 2 rounds against Sturt at Unley, and North at Prospect.

Glenelg then won 3 of their next 4 matches, the most impressive of which was a 9-point win against finalist Norwood. So after 7 rounds, Glenelg were in 5th place with a 3-4 record, only percentage behind Torrens in 4th place, and still well in finals contention.

Glenelg then lost their next 6 games in a row, which put paid to any finals aspirations they might have had, as after 13 of 17 rounds they were 4 games and percentage outside the top-4.

In the last 4 rounds of the season the motivation to make the finals may have disappeared, but the motivation for a young club to keep improving and setting new and higher benchmarks was still there.
So driven by the goal of exceeding the previous best efforts of 5 wins in a season and a 7th placed finish, Glenelg won the last 4 games of the season (including 2 wins against top-4 sides Norwood & North), to finish 6th on the ladder with 7 wins - 10 losses, just 2 games and percentage outside the final-4.

  • Jim Handby was Captain-Coach for a 4th season (and 2nd season in a row).
  • Len Sallis won Glenelg's best & fairest award for a record 3rd time, and was runner-up in the Magarey Medal.
  • Jack Owens was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 8th consecutive year with 78 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1931 season were Len Sallis, Jim Handby, Clem Hill, Arthur Link & Ray Edwards.
  • Glenelg recorded their first win against North Adelaide, and their first wins at Norwood Oval and the Wayville Showgrounds.
  • Glenelg recorded their longest ever winning streak of 4 matches in a row.

1932 - 7th

1932 Season Summary

1932 season chart

With Jim Handby continuing on in his 3rd consecutive year as captain-coach, Glenelg got off to a solid start by winning half of their opening four games of the 1932 season. They had two narrow wins over bottom-4 teams from 1931 (West by 8-points, Torrens by 12-points) and two losses against top-4 teams from 1931 (North by 22-points, Norwood by 10-points), which had them sitting in 4th position on percentage after 4 rounds.

Then in the next two rounds, Glenelg had their biggest wins in the history of the club to date.
In round 5 they thrashed Port Adelaide by 50-points at Alberton Oval (only their 2nd ever win against them), and the following round they beat that record again by belting South Adelaide by 60-points.

This had Glenelg sitting in 3rd place after 6 rounds with a 4-2 win-loss record, half a game behind 2nd placed Sturt who they would play in the next round. Unfortunately they got thrashed by Sturt by 52-points, and two more losses in the next two of rounds saw Glenelg slip out of the top-4 for the first time since round 2.

So after 9 rounds Glenelg were sitting in 5th place, one game outside the top-4, but if they could beat 7th placed Torrens in the next round they would again be equal with the 4th placed team and well in finals contention.
However, when they lost this round 10 match against Torrens by 3-points, Glenelg's finals chances started to slip away - they would still remain in contention but it would be an uphill battle.

Another loss in round 11 (their 5th loss in a row) saw them slip 2 games out of the top-4, but an upset 7-point win against Port in round 12 (their 2nd win against Port for the season and only their 3rd ever) saw Glenelg claw back to only being one game outside the top-4 in 6th place with a 5-7 record and 5 games remaining.

But then two consecutive losses to bottom placed South by 14-points, and 4th placed Sturt by 13-points, left Glenelg in 7th place, 2.5 games outside the top-4 with only 3 games left. Glenelg then lost their last 3 games (for 5 losses in a row) to finish the season in 7th place with 5 wins - 12 losses.

  • With 102 goals, Jack Owens became the first Glenelg player to kick 100 goals in a season, and became Glenelg's top goalkicker for an incredible 9th season in a row.
  • Jack Owens was the league's leading goalkicker at the end of the minor round for a 4th time. And even after Ken Farmer equalled his tally after kicking 13 goals in the finals, Jack Owens was the leading goalkicker in the league at the end of the season for a 3rd time.
  • George 'Blue' Johnston won his first Glenelg best & fairest award.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1932 season were 'Blue' Johnston, Clem Hill, Arthur Link, Jim Handby & Jack Owens.
  • Despite their lowly finish, Glenelg were the 2nd highest scoring team in the league.

1933 - 6th

1933 Season Summary

1933 season chart

In 1933, after Jim Handby's retirement, Jack Owens was appointed Captain, and Bruce McGregor, dual Magarey Medallist and Captain-Coach of West's 1927 premiership side, was appointed Coach.

The season got off to a poor start when Glenelg lost to the previous season's wooden-spooners South in round 1, but despite the loss there was genuine excitement about the debut of 19-year-old Clem Rosewarne (father of club stalwart, Laurie) who kicked 11 goals on his debut.

They got their season back on track with 3 wins from their next 4 games, including wins against top-4 sides, Norwood and North. So after 5 rounds Glenelg were sitting in equal 3rd position on 3 wins - 2 losses.

But then successive heartbreaking losses to Torrens by 5-points, Port by 1-point, and Norwood by 18-points in rounds 6,7 & 8 would ultimately prove to be decisive in Glenelg not making their first ever finals appearance, as it left them in 6th position, 2 games outside the top-4 after 8 rounds.

However they kept fighting on, and won 5 of their next 6 matches, including a 27-point win against top of the table Sturt in round 14, to have them sitting in 6th position on 8 wins - 6 losses (already a club best season), and only half a game outside the top-4, with three rounds remaining.

Unfortunately though their last 3 games were against the 2nd, 3rd & 4th ranked teams (two of them away), which meant if they were going to make it they would definitely have to earn it. As it turned out they lost to Norwood by 41 points at The Parade and Torrens by 26 points at The Bay, but beat 2nd placed North at Prospect by 4 points in the last round to finish the season in 6th position on the ladder with 9 wins & 8 losses, 1.5 games outside the final four.

Being that close to a top-4 spot highlights how important those early season losses of less than a goal to Torrens & Port were - those 2 extra wins would have lifted them to equal 2nd on the ladder, but third on percentage. But the most encouraging aspect of the season was that they were competitive against the top sides, as they played the top four teams on 10 occasions, for 4 wins and 6 losses - and half of those losses were by 3 goals or less.

  • Len Sallis won his 4th Glenelg best & fairest award, and was 2nd in the Magarey Medal, only 2 votes behind winner W.K. Dunn of Sturt.
  • Clem Rosewarne with 74 goals, pipped Jack Owens by 1 goal to win the club's top goalkicking honour.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1933 season were 'Blue' Johnston, Roy Colyer, Arthur Link, Len Sallis & Jack Owens.
  • The team achieved their highest score and their biggest winning margin in their history, when they kicked 24.21 165 to beat West by 86 points.
  • Glenelg finished the season with more wins than losses for the first time, and had a percentage above 50% for the first time.

1941 Season Summary

1941 season chart

Glenelg appointed club stalwart Ray Curnow as coach for the 1941 season, and Ron Keane continued as captain after taking over the role from Marcus Boyall early in the previous season.

Considering The Bays had won the last 4 wooden-spoons in a row, the 1941 season got off to a surprisingly good start with big wins of 59-points over North Adelaide and 41-points over West Torrens in the first two rounds.
And that start could have been even better as in the next two rounds they lost to West Adelaide by just 9-points, and then after being 17-points up at 3/4 time they lost to Port Adelaide by just 7-points (even though Glenelg had 8 more scoring shots).
So after 4 rounds they were in 3rd spot with a 2-2 record, but they could have been 4-0 and on top of the ladder.

In the next 5 rounds Glenelg held their own by winning 2 out of 5 games, but once again it could have been so much better as they lost to Sturt by just 5-points, and lost to West Torrens by just 2-points.
So after 9 rounds Glenelg were in 5th position with a 4-5 record, and only half a game behind Port in 4th. But if they had won just half of those 4 narrow losses (which is not unreasonable) they could have been anywhere between top and 3rd.

For the rest of the season Glenelg only won 1 game, but blew a number of winning chances... in a 14-point loss against Port in round 11 Glenelg again had 6 more scoring shots... in round 13 against South, Glenelg gave up a 14-point 3/4 time lead, and conceded two late goals to lose by 13 points... and again in round 17 against South, Glenelg gave up a 13-point 3/4 time lead, and once again conceded two late goals to lose by 5-points.

So Glenelg finished the 1941 season in 6th spot with a 5-12 record, and a whopping 6.5 games outside the final-4, but were well in contention in 7 of their losses, and if they had won their fair share of those they could have been in the finals mix.

  • Marcus Boyall won Glenelg's best & fairest award.
  • Marcus Boyall became Glenelg's 4th Magarey Medallist (and 2nd in a row after Mel Brock won in 1940). Boyall was also 3rd in the Brownlow Medal in 1938 when playing for Collingwood, then moved to Glenelg for the 1939 season, but had to sit out the season because Collingwood would not clear him.
  • Frank Burt was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 2nd season in a row with 55 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1941 season were Marcus Boyall by a long way to Mel Brock, Merv Waite, Ned Hender, Ray Hunt & Ron Keane.

1945 - 7th

1945 Season Summary

1945 season chart

After a 3 year hiatus during World War II where the regular 8-team SANFL competition was suspended and replaced by a competition between 4 amalgamated sides (West-Glenelg, Port-Torrens, Norwood-North & Sturt-South), the regular 8-team SANFL competition resumed in 1945.
Ray Curnow resumed his role as Glenelg coach in 1945 (after being coach in 1941, as well as coaching West-Glenelg in 1943 & 1944), and Dick Corbett was appointed Captain.

Without their 2 most dominant players of 1941 (in Magarey Medallists Marcus Boyall and Mel Brock) and with 20 players making their league debut during the 1945 season, Glenelg struggled to make an impact in 1945.

In the first 10 rounds, wins were very sporadic, enough to keep them in touch with the top-4, but not enough to gain them a foothold inside the top-4.
After 10 rounds Glenelg were in 6th place on the ladder with a 4—6 win-loss record, and just 1 game outside the top-4.
But in the last 7 rounds they only won 1 more game, and finished the season in 7th place with a 5—12 win-loss record, 4 wins outside the final-4.

The highlight of the season was undoubtedly a rare 9-point win against Norwood at Norwood Oval, just Glenelg's 4th win at the ground in 24 attempts - with 2 of their other 3 wins there coming in Glenelg's 1934 premiership season.
But Glenelg's only other wins during the season were against 6th ranked West and 3 wins against bottom side South.

  • Frank Burt won Glenelg's best and fairest award.
  • With 57 goals for the season, Frank Burt was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 3rd time, and became the first player to win Glenelg's best & fairest and be top goalkicker in the same season.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1945 season were Frank Burt, Ron Keane, Dick Corbett, & Raymond Cock.

1948 - 6th

1948 Season Summary

1948 season chart

From 1935 to 1947, in the 10 seasons of the regular 8-team SANFL competition either side of World War II, Glenelg had won just 30 out of 170 matches, and finished last 6 times, 2nd last 3 times, and 3rd last once.

1948 was the first season since 1934 that Glenelg showed some signs that they could become competitive again.
It was the first season in Glenelg's history where they did not lose 3 games in a row, only 3 of their losses during the season were by more than 5 goals, their 8 wins easily exceeded their previous best since 1934 of 5 wins in a season, and they won at Alberton for the first time since 1936.

But whilst Glenelg were competitive they did not deserve to qualify for finals, as their record against the sides that played in the finals was 2 wins - 8 losses (a 20% win rate), whereas their record against the sides that didn't make the finals was 6 wins - 1 loss (an 86% win rate).
The only finals bound side that Glenelg were able to beat was West Adelaide, who they beat by 15-points in round 5, and by 11-points in round 17.

Nevertheless, with five rounds remaining, Glenelg were still in finals contention on 6 wins - 6 losses, just two games behind 4th placed West, whom they played the following round - if they won that game, they would only be 1 game outside the top-4. Unfortunately they lost this pivotal match and finished the season in 6th place with 8 wins & 9 losses - two games and percentage outside the final four.

  • Ray Curnow was Glenelg's coach for the 5th successive season (either side of the war), and Norm Betson was captain.
  • Alex Donaldson won Glenelg's best & fairest award.
  • Colin Churchett was Glenelg's top goalkicker with 88 goals, and became the 2nd Glenelg player, after Jack Owens, to be the league's leading goalkicker.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1948 season were Alex Donaldson, Clarrie Window, Ray Hunt, Ted Robjent, Colin Churchett & Arthur Hannaford.

In 1949, Glenelg adopted the black guernsey with a yellow sash, as worn by Richmond, and appointed Port legend Allan 'Bull' Reval as coach - ending Ray Curnow's reign as coach which had begun in 1941.

After 10 rounds Glenelg were sitting in 6th position, but equal with Torrens and Port in 4th & 5th, on 5 wins - 5 losses.

In round 11 Glenelg narrowly lost to Torrens by 4-points - putting them a game behind - but they kept in touch with the top-4 by defeating top side Norwood by 4-points at Norwood Oval in round 12 thanks to a goal on the final siren by Don Laffin - this was only their 2nd win at Norwood Oval since 1934.

Unfortunately this good work was undone the following week in round 13 when they suffered a 2-point loss to bottom side Sturt (for just their 2nd win of the season).

So with just 4 rounds remaining, Glenelg were in 6th position on 6 wins - 7 losses, 1 game and percentage behind new 4th side West, who they were due to play in the next round in a must win match for Glenelg.

Unfortunately Glenelg sabotaged their finals chances with appalling kicking for goal, kicking 11-20 in a 36-point loss to West which left them 2 games and percentage behind 4th placed West with only 3 games remaining.
Despite winning 2 of their last 3 games Glenelg finished the season in 5th position with 8 wins & 9 losses, 3 games and percentage ouside the top-4.

  • Allan Crabb was appointed Captain and won Glenelg's best & fairest award. He also tied with H.R. Phillips in the Magarey Medal. Unfortunately at the time, ties were resolved using a countback method, and Crabb was adjudged to be runner-up with Phillips the sole winner.
Forty-Nine years later this countback system was abolished and all players who had come second on a countback were retrospectively awarded the Magarey medal.
So in 1998, Allan Crabb became a 1949 Magarey medallist.
  • Colin Churchett was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 3rd season in a row with 72 goals, including 13 goals in a match against South at Glenelg Oval.
  • Colin Churchett was also the league's top goalkicker for the 2nd season in a row.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1949 season were Allan Crabb by a long way to Ted Robjent, Bill Trenorden, Don Laffin, Arthur Hannaford & Cliff Brooker.

1952 Season Summary

1952 season chart

Unfortunately the 1952 season got off to a very poor start with 4 consecutive losses including 2 nail biting losses to top-4 sides, Torrens by 1-point and North by 2-points in rounds 2 & 3, followed by a costly 28-point loss to the previous season's bottom side South Adelaide in round 4.
So after 4 rounds Glenelg were bottom of the ladder and would be chasing their tails for the rest of the season trying to recoup lost ground in their quest for a finals berth.

Three wins from their next four games had them sitting in 6th place, 1 game behind Norwood & West in equal 4th after round 8.
The next four rounds went according to ladder positions with two more losses to finals bound Torrens & North and wins against the bottom two sides South & Sturt.

So with 5 rounds remaining Glenelg were in 5th place, 2 games behind equal 3rd placed Norwood & Torrens, and importantly, they were due to play Norwood twice, as well as two teams below them on the ladder, West & Sturt in their last 5 rounds - all sides they had already beaten during the season, and if they won those 4 games again then they would qualify for finals

link to 1952 team photo

Their round 13 match against Norwood loomed as a season defining must win game, but in a close hard fought contest at Norwood Oval, Glenelg went down by 4-points, which left them 3 games and percentage outside the top-4 with only 4 games to play - and their finals chances looking very remote.

The following week they also lost to West which completely killed off their finals aspirations, and with just 1 win in their last 3 games Glenelg finished the season in 5th place with a 6—11 record, 4 games and percentage outside the top-4.

  • Johnny Taylor continued as Captain-Coach for a 3rd consecutive season.
  • Don Taylor won Glenelg's best & fairest award.
  • Laurie Taylor was Glenelg's top goalkicker with 39 goals, and Colin Churchett who spent the second half of the season at centre half forward was 2nd with 28 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1952 season were Don Taylor by a long way to Allan Crabb, Johnny Taylor, Laurie Taylor & Alf Bailey.

1955 Season Summary

1955 season chart

Former Essendon player and coach Charlie 'Chooka' May replaced Pat Hall as Coach for the 1955 season, and Allan Crabb was appointed Captain.
Colin Chuchett and Don Taylor only played a handful of games between them in 1954, and both had retired by the end of that season. In addition Glenelg also lost Neil Davies for the 1955 season as he wanted to try his luck with Richmond in the VFL.
On the flip side, they recruited gun Richmond and VFL state player Billy Wilson, and he starred for the Bays, finishing 3rd in the Magarey Medal.

After poor kicking for goal resulted in Glenelg losing their round 1 match against Sturt by 7-points, Glenelg won 4 of their next 6 matches, with the highlight being a 6-point victory over reigning premiers Port Adelaide in round 7. This had Glenelg sitting in 5th place on the ladder with a 4-3 record, equal with Port in 4th place but behind on percentage.

link to 1955 team photo

In the next 2 rounds Glenelg's finals chances were not helped by consecutive 2-point losses to top of the ladder Sturt and and then to bottom of the ladder South, which left Glenelg in 5th position after 9 rounds on 4 wins - 5 losses, but still just 1/2 a game outside the top-4.

However Glenelg's season was now at the cross-roads, with their next 2 matches against the sides they were in direct competition with for that last final-4 spot, North (who were 1 win behind in 6th spot) and Torrens (who were 1 win in front in 4th spot).
Unfortunately Glenelg lost both these matches and their finals chances had all but evaporated as they were now in 6th spot and 2.5 games behind 4th placed Torrens, with 6 matches remaining - and 4 of those 6 matches were against sides in the top-3 at the time.

Although Glenelg did manage to win 3 or their last 6 games, it wasn't enough and they finished in 6th position with 7 wins - 10 losses, 2 games and percentage outside the final-4.

  • Billy Wilson won Glenelg's best & fairest award, and was equal 3rd in the Magarey Medal.
  • Brian Rundle was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 2nd season in row with 56 goals, and was also the league's top goalkicker at the end of the minor, but was overtaken by Sturt's Paul Caust in the finals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1955 season were Billy Wilson by along way to Alf Bailey, Stan Wickham & Allan Crabb.

1956 - 6th

1956 Season Summary

1956 season chart

Glenelg won 3 of their first 7 games in the 1956 season, and a draw against bottom side Sturt in round 8 lifted them into 4th position on the ladder, half a game in front of Norwood in 5th place.

A round 9 loss to undefeated top side Port saw Norwood replace Glenelg in the top-4, but a win against 3rd bottom side South at The Bay Oval the following round would have restored Glenelg back into 4th position. Unfortunately they lost to South by 8-points, which once again left them half a game outside the top-4, and that loss was the first of a number of sliding door moments that culminated in Glenelg not making the finals.

The next critical moment was in round 12 against Norwood, where a win would have put Glenelg in 6th place just half a game behind Norwood in 4th, but the 19-point loss left them in 7th place and 2.5 games outside the top-4 with 6 games remaining.

From this point on, to have any chance of playing finals, Glenelg could not afford any more slip-ups, but the very next round they kicked 8 -20 against Torrens (who were level with them on the ladder) and lost by 32 points, despite having 8 more scoring shots.
This effectively ended Glenelg's finals chances as they were now 3.5 games out with just 5 rounds remaining.

Despite winning 3 of their last 5 games, it was too little too late and Glenelg finished in 6th position, 3.5 games behind Norwood in 4th.

  • Charlie May continued as coach for a 2nd season.
  • Allan Crabb continued as captain for a 2nd season, and retired at the end of the season.
  • Neil Davies won Glenelg's best & fairest award.
  • Neil Davies was Glenelg's top goalkicker.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1956 season were Neil Davies by a long way to Don Hewett & Ron Baillie.

1957 Season Summary

1957 season chart

Led by new captain Neil Davies, Glenelg got off to a terrific start to the 1957 season with a well deserved 10-point upset win against the previous season's runners up West Adelaide.
This was followed by a couple of less surprising but never the less welcome wins against against the bottom two teams of 1956, Sturt by 22-points and South by 89-points.

So after 3 rounds Glenelg were undefeated and sitting on top of the premiership ladder.
They stayed inside the top-4 until a Round 6 thrashing by Norwood, saw Norwood replace them in 4th spot, leaving Glenelg in 5th place, 1 game outside the four.

A critical point in Glenelg's season was a round 8 loss to 4th placed Torrens by 5-points which was their 5th loss in a row and left them 2 games outside the four, when a win would have kept them in touch and only half a game outside the four. Their prospects were further damaged in the following two rounds with convincing losses to 2nd bottom side Sturt by 50-points and bottom side South by 32-points (after kicking 11-21).

Glenelg's final chance to salvage their season came in round 11 against 4th placed West Adelaide, where a win would have kept them in the finals race just 1 game outside the top-4 with 7 games remaining. But they lost to West by 8-points which put them 3 games outside the four, and their finals hopes all but gone.

After their 9th loss in a row in round 12, Glenelg belatedly won 3 of their last 6 games, finishing 7th with a 6-12 record, 5 games outside the final-4.

  • Charlie May continued as coach for a 3rd successive season.
  • Brian Wright won Glenelg's best & fairest award for the 2nd time.
  • Kevin Abley was Glenelg's top goalkicker with 41 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1957 season were Neil Davies, Brian Wright, Graham Fraser & Billy Wilson.

1958 - 7th

1958 Season Summary

1958 season chart

The 1958 season got off to an ominous start when Glenelg lost to the previous season's wooden spooner by 1-point at Glenelg Oval. In the next 6 rounds Glenelg only won 2 matches, one of which was an impressive 30-point win over eventual Grand Finalist West Adelaide thanks to their accurate kicking for goal (14-3), but two narrow losses of 9-points and 12-points were due to their poor kicking for goal (13-17 & 9-15).

After a 68-point win against South Adelaide in round 8, Glenelg were in 5th place on the ladder with a 3-5 win-loss record, a healthy percentage and still just 1 game behind Norwood in 4th place.

4 losses in a row (including a 12-point loss to bottom side Sturt) nearly ended their finals chances, but a 1-point win over eventual premier Port Adelaide in round 13 kept them in the finals hunt.
After 13 rounds Glenelg were in 6th position on 4 wins - 9 losses, 1.5 wins outside the top-4 with 5 rounds still to play.

If they were good enough they could still make it, but they would most likely need to win 4 of their last 5 games - which seemed possible as 3 of those games were against sides that were outside the top-4, and Glenelg had already proven that they could beat top-4 sides by defeating West & Port earlier in the season.

Even after another narrow loss to South by 2-points in round 15 put a severe dent in their finals aspirations, a 3-point win against bottom side Sturt the following round still left Glenelg with a remote chance of making the finals - they were 1.5 games outside the top-4 with 2 games to play, but they needed other results to go their way as well as winning their last 2 games.

But Glenelg lost their last two games to finish in 7th place on 5 wins - 13 losses, 2.5 games oustide the final-4. So despite only winning 5 games, Glenelg were not far off from making the finals as 7 of their matches were decided by 2-goals or less - for 2 wins & 5 losses... if those results were reversed (5-2) then they would have made it.

  • Neil Davies continued as Captain for a second season, and also took over as coach from 'Chooka' May.
  • Peter Cutten was Glenelg's best & fairest winner.
  • Raymond Rocher was Glenelg's top goalkicker with 38 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1958 season were Colin Richens, Graham Fraser, Neil Davies, Ian May & Ron Baillie.

1962 - 5th

1962 Season Summary

1962 season chart

After two lean seasons in 1960 & 1961, with only 6 wins from 37 games, 1962 saw Doug Long recruited from Geelong and appointed Captain-Coach at just 21 years of age, and a change in uniform to a black guernsey with a yellow yoke and colllar.

Under the new leadership Glenelg showed a substantial improvement in 1962. Whilst they were defeated atleast once by every other side, atleast they were able to defeat every other side apart from eventual premier Port Adelaide (where the closest they got was a 5-point loss in round 12).

During the season Glenelg were twice able to string 3 consecutive wins together (a feat not achieved since 1959), and if not for that 5-point loss to Port in round 12, would have won 7 in a row.

After 15 rounds, with 4 matches remaining, Glenelg were sitting in 4th spot on 9 wins & 6 losses - half a game in front of Torrens in 5th position, who they were due to play in the next round.
Unfortunately they lost convincingly to Torrens in round 16, which put them half a game out of the top four, but were due to play 2 of the bottom 3 sides in the last 3 rounds and were still a chance to make the finals.

In round 17, a golden opportunity to re-enter the top 4 presented itself when the two sides who were half a win above them on the ladder played each other, whilst Glenelg played South Adelaide at Glenelg Oval, who were bottom with 1 win - 15 losses and had an average losing margin of 11 goals. In a match where Glenelg trailed for most of the day, three points to Glenelg late in the last quarter levelled the scores, until two points to South in the last 90 seconds secured them the win, and effectively ended Glenelg's finals chances.

Glenelg proceeded to lose their last 2 matches (making it four losses in a row) to finish in 5th spot with 9 wins & 10 losses - only 1.5 games out of the final four.
But, if not for 2-point and 10-point losses to bottom placed South and third bottom North in the last 3 rounds, it all could have been different.

  • Don Hewett won the club best & fairest award.
  • Colin Richens was the club's leading goalkicker with 29 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1962 season were Colin Richens, Don Hewett, Doug Long, Peter Cutten, Harry Kernahan & Chris Hunt.

1963 - 7th

1963 Season Summary

1963 season chart

The 1963 season got off to an ominous start when bad kicking for goal (6-20) cost Glenelg any chance of beating the previous season's 2nd bottom side Sturt (who were rebuilding under 2nd year coach Jack Oatey), and only getting home by 19-points against the bottom side South in round 2, after coming from 19-points down at 3/4 time and kicking 8-3 in the last quarter. Then in round 3, inaccuracy in front of goal (9-16), once again sabotaged Glenelg's chances of victory against a rampaging North in a 27-point loss.

In the next 5 rounds, Glenelg's only win was against eventual minor premier West Torrens by 17-points, which left them 2nd last on the ladder after 8 rounds with a 2—6 record, 2 games outside the top-4.
A 19-point win against eventual premier Port Adelaide in round 9 on a muddy Bay Oval raised hopes that Glenelg could revive their season and kept them in touch with the top-4, still only 2 games out.

But in order to build momentum towards a finals berth, they needed to string consecutive wins together, which was something that had so far eluded them this season.
They absolutely had to beat 6th placed Sturt the following round, and when they were 46-points up at 3/4 time, they were well on their way to resurrecting their season. But Sturt kicked 8-6 in the last quarter to snatch victory by 2-points, and Glenelg's fate for the season was determined, as they were now 3 games and percentage outside the top-4.

A 16-point win against 4th placed Norwood in round 11 brought them back to within 2 games of the top-4, and an unconvincing 1-point win against bottom team South in round 13, again dragged them back to within 2 games of the four, but without consecutive wins they were never going to get anywhere.

In the last 7 rounds Glenelg had two narrow losses - to Sturt by 4-points and North by 9-points - but only 1 win - against bottom side South in the last round - and finished the season in 7th place with 6 wins - 14 losses, 6 games outside the final-4.

  • Doug Long was Captain-Coach of Glenelg for a 2nd season.
  • Colin Richens won Glenelg's best & fairest award for a 3rd time.
  • Kevin Rowe was the club's leading goalkicker with 43 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1963 season were Haydn Linke, Chris Hunt, Colin Richens & Harry Kernahan.

1965 Season Summary

1965 season chart

After narrowly losing to eventual premier Port Adelaide by 3-points in round 1, Glenelg were then soundly beaten by the other two finalists (Sturt & South) from the previous season, and were sitting winless at the bottom of the ladder after 3 rounds.

But from rounds 4 to 8 Glenelg's draw got easier and they won 5 games in a row to be sitting in 5th position with 5 wins - 3 losses, and only percentage behind Sturt & North in 3rd & 4th.

In the next 7 rounds Glenelg lost again to the top 3 sides (Port, South, Sturt) for a second time, but continued to beat everyone else that they played, so that after 15 rounds Glenelg were on 9 wins - 6 losses, in 6th place on the ladder, but equal on wins with Norwood & North in 4th & 5th.

In round 16, this pattern of losing to the top 3 and beating everyone else changed when Glenelg hung on to defeat Sturt in a tight finish, which left Sturt, Norwood, North & Glenelg all in equal 3rd place with 10 wins - 6 losses. With only four rounds to play, only two of those four sides were likely to make the finals, and Glenelg would need to win one game more than the others as they had a vastly inferior percentage.

With matches away to North and Norwood in the next two rounds, Glenelg's fate was in their own hands, they could make the finals if they were good enough to beat North and Norwood for a second time. Unfortunately they lost them both, along with the two matches after that, and they finished the season in 6th position with 10 wins & 10 losses. So just as had happened in 1962, after being in 4th or equal 4th spot with 4 rounds remaining, they lost their last 4 matches to miss the finals - although on this ocassion Glenelg were never in the top 4 at any stage during the season.

Unfortunately, and not for the last time, the inequities in the SANFL draw may have also played a role in the shaping of the final four, as both Norwood & North's two extra games were against bottom 3 sides (with 7 wins between them), whereas Glenelg's two extra games were against the eventual grand finalists (with 30 wins between them) - quite a stark difference.

  • Len Fitzgerald continued as coach for a second season, and Harry Kernahan continued as captain for a second season.
  • Brian McGowan won the best & fairest in 1965.
  • Ray Button was the club's top goalkicker in 1965 with 61 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1965 season were Brian McGowan, Ray Button, Colin Rice, Harry Kernahan, Doug Long & Bob Anesbury.

1968 Season Summary

1968 season chart

In Neil Kerley's second year as Captain-Coach, Glenelg recruited state captain and 1962 Magarey Medallist Ken Eustice, who had just completed a four year stint as the inaugural captain-coach of expansion club Central Districts.

Due to making finals in 1967, the Bays had a tougher draw in 1968, but after losing their opening two games against the previous season's grand finalists, they then won 10 of their next 13 games, including victories over finalists Port, North and West and a 1 point loss to top side Sturt.
This had them sitting comfortably inside the top 4 after round 15 with a 10 - 5 win-loss record, 1 game behind Port in 2nd, and 2 games ahead of West in 5th, with just 5 games remaining.

But then the wheels fell off.
Up until round 15 the only teams Glenelg had lost to were the other 3 sides in the top 4 (Sturt, Port & North). But in round 16 they lost to 9th ranked Centrals, with Neil Kerley getting suspended for the next 2 matches, and in round 17 they only kicked 3-15 in a 42-point loss to North.

Then after a round 18 loss to 7th ranked South, Glenelg were replaced in the top 4 by West Adelaide, who they would face in the next round in a match which would decide which team secured the last finals spot.

In this do-or-die round 19 clash, West jumped to a 4 goal lead at half-time, and despite only scoring 3 points in the 2nd half, managed to hold on and win by 6 points.
In the last round, for Glenelg to qualify for the finals, they needed to beat bottom side Norwood by atleast 15 goals and hope West lost to 8th side Centrals. Neither of these things happened (although Glenelg did win by 43-points) - so the Bays finished in 5th spot, with 11 wins & 9 losses - a wasted season.

  • Graham Cornes won his first club best & fairest award.
  • Fred Phillis was the club's leading goalkicker with 30 goals and 31 points (and quite a few out of bounds) - after starting his career as a defender.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1968 season were Peter Marker, Graham Cornes, Neil Kerley & Brian Colbey.

1971 Season Summary

1971 season chart

With a 9 win - 12 loss record, 1971 was Glenelg's worst season during Neil Kerley's reign as coach. Although this was probably exaggerated by the inequities in the draw, as because of their high finish in 1970, the teams Glenelg had to play a third time in 1971 were North, Port and Sturt who were the top three teams of 1971 - and by contrast the teams 4th placed Centrals had to play a third time were the 7th, 8th & 9th teams of 1971.

Glenelg lost their first four games of the 1971 season, the worst of which was a diabolical loss to lowly South Adelaide by 8 points, after being 8 goals up at half time.

After 7 rounds they were equal bottom with Torrens on 1 win - 6 losses, and even though the biggest of their losses was just 17 points, they were already 5 games outside the top 4, and they never recovered from that bad start.
That being said, after winning 8 of their next 11 games (including wins against eventual finalists Port by 20-points, Centrals by 34-points, and Sturt by 7-points), they climbed into the top 4 for the first time after a club record 170 point over Woodville in round 18.

However in the last 3 rounds, they lost their third meeting against each of the top 3 sides (North, Port & Sturt) and finished 6th, with 9 wins - 12 losses, 3 games outside the top 4.

  • Peter Marker began his 7 year stint as Glenelg captain, won the club's best & fairest award, was runner-up in the Magarey medal by 1 vote to Russell Ebert, and became the club's second State Captain - after Neil Davies.
  • Fred Phillis was the club's top goalkicker for the 4th consecutive season with 102 goals, including 10 goals in a match aginst Woodville at Glenelg Oval.
  • Fred Phillis was also the league's top goalkicker for the 3rd year in a row, kicking 99 goals in the SANFL competition - and 102 goals when the coca-cola cup is included.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1971 season were Peter Marker, Graham Cornes, Rex Voigt, Brian Colbey & Wayne Phillis.
  • Peter Carey made his debut against Centrals at Elizabeth in round 12, 1971, and Harry Kernahan retired after succumbing to a knee injury.
  • Glenelg won the Coca Cola cup - a knockout competition during the finals for sides ranked 5th to 8th on the ladder - by defeating West Torrens and Norwood.
  • Glenelg won their 4th Colts premiership.

1972 - 6th

1972 Season Summary

1972 season chart

Glenelg got off to another slow start in the 1972 season, getting belted by North and Norwood in the first two rounds by 67 and 48 points respectively, but managed to turn it around a lot quicker than they did in 1971, by winning their next 5 in a row, starting with a crucial 10-point win against Sturt in round 3.

So after 7 rounds Glenelg were sitting in 2nd spot with 5 wins - 2 losses, but were only one game in front of 6th placed Port, and the next block of five games would tell the tale of the season as they were due to play the other five sides in the top six - and they needed to win their fair share.

Unfortunately Glenelg were only able to win 1 of those 5 games and the fate of their season was decided then and there. Narrow losses to Centrals and Port of 7-points and 8-points were very costly, and even though they belted top side Norwood by 84 points in round 11, at the end of round 12 they were sixth on the ladder with 6 wins - 6 losses, and were two games and percentage outside the top 4.
But the real killer blow to their finals aspirations occurred the following round when they lost to bottom side South by 12-points.

Even after round 15, with six rounds remaining Glenelg were still in finals contention on 8 wins - 7 losses, just 2 games outside the top 4.
They could still make finals if they were good enough to beat the sides above them on the ladder - but they weren't good enough as throughout the season they only won 1 of their 9 games against the top 4 sides but won 10 of their 12 encounters with teams outside the top 4. Glenelg finished the season in 6th spot with 11 wins, 10 losses - which is where they belonged.

  • Neil Kerley was coach for a 6th successive season, and Peter Marker was in his 2nd season as captain.
  • Peter Marker was SA State Captain in the Australian Football Carnival in Perth, and came third in The Tassie Medal.
  • Graham Cornes won his second Glenelg best & fairest award.
  • Fred Phillis was Glenelg's top goalkicker for the 5th season in a row with 75 goals - after moving to Melbourne for work, missing the first 3 rounds, and then flying back each week.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1972 season were Graham Cornes, Peter Marker, Peter Carey, Brian Colbey, Rex Voigt & Wayne Phillis.

1979 Season Summary

1979 season chart

For 1979, Sturt legend John Halbert was appointed coach and 21 year old Paul Weston was appointed captain - Glenelg's youngest captain since the days of Colin Richens in 1960 and Doug Long in 1962.
With the retirements of Peter Marker and Fred Phillis, the departure of Graham Cornes for North Melbourne in the VFL, and the arrival of Keith Kuhlmann, Peter Woite, Malcolm Greenslade and Leon Twelftree from other clubs, it was a very different looking Glenelg side from the previous season.

Glenelg got off to a great start under Halbert, thrashing his former club and previous season's grand finalist Sturt by 50 points at Unley Oval, and beating reigning premiers Norwood in a thriller at Football Park by 1 point (thanks to a late Stephen Copping goal), in the first two rounds.
But that was pretty much it, as from rounds 3 to 14, Glenelg won 2, drew 1 & lost 9 matches, leaving them second bottom, only 1 win in front of cellar dwellers West.

In a very even competition, a round 15 win over then top side South, bought them to within 1.5 games of 5th spot with 7 matches remaining, but losing 3 of their next 4 games left them out of finals contention.

They did win their last 3 matches - including wins over 4th placed Norwood and eventual premiers Port - which lifted them to 7th position with 9 wins, 12 losses & a draw, and provided a bit of hope for 1980.

  • Peter Carey won his 2nd club best & fairest award, while Paul Weston came 3rd in the Magarey medal for the second time.
  • Kym Hodgeman and Stephen Copping tied for the club's top goalkicking honours, with 32 goals each.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1979 season were Peter Carey by a long way to Paul Weston, David Holst, Kym Hodgeman & Graham Cornes.
  • After joining North Melbourne at the start of the season, Graham Cornes returned to Glenelg half-way through the season and promptly won the Simpson medal in the state game against WA in Perth.
  • Glenelg had three players selected in the All-Australian side - Graham Cornes, Peter Carey & Kym Hodgeman - after the Australian Football carnival held in Perth in October, along with Richmond this was the equal most of any club in Australia, which is quite remarkable for a side which finished 7th in the SANFL.
  • During the 1979 season, Glenelg had a 50% win rate against the top 4 sides (Port,South,Centrals,Norwood), but only a 37.5% win rate against sides in the bottom 6.

1983 Season Summary

1983 season chart

After coach John Halbert left the club to return home to coach Sturt, Glenelg appointed Graham Campbell as coach for 1983, and Peter Carey was appointed captain - as former captain Paul Weston had transferred to Essendon in the VFL.

In a tumultuous start to the season - after making the grand final the year before - Glenelg lost it's first 8 games by an average margin of 50-points.
Only 2 of those 8 losses were by less than three goals, 4 of the losses were by over nine goals, and another loss of 43-points was after they were 29-points up at 3/4 time.
It was Glenelg's worst start to a season for 37 years - since their 0-14 start in 1946.

They appeared to be a young side struggling to adjust to a new coach's methods and eccentricities, and they needed to grow up quickly.
And grow up quickly they did. When Campbell was sacked after the humiliating 55-point loss to eventual wooden-spooner Woodvile in round 7, the players took responsibility for their predicament and sent a delegation to the board to advocate for his re-appointment, which the board accepted.

The undoubted talent in the side (as evidenced by the 6 grand finals they made in the 7 seasons surrounding 1983) eventually came to the fore, winning 9 of their next 12 games (and 6 of those 9 wins were against sides in the top-5 at the time). This drew Glenelg level with the fifth placed team with two rounds to go - but with an inferior percentage.
But it was too little too late, as they lost their last two games (to top 3 sides, West & Norwood) and finished in 7th place, with 9 wins and 13 losses.

Highlights of the season included lifting themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a 12-point win against the top side and eventual premier West Adelaide in round 12, and a 95 point belting of old foe Port Adelaide at Glenelg Oval in round 19 which knocked them out of the top 5.

  • Stephen Kernahan won his first best & fairest award for the club, and was also the club's leading goalkicker with 58 goals. He became only the 4th player in Glenelg's history to win both the best & fairest award and be top goalkicker in the same season - after Frank Burt in 1945, Neil Davies in 1956, Kym Hodgeman in 1978.
  • Stephen Kernahan also polled the most votes in the 1983 Magarey medal, but was ineligible due to suspension for a striking charge in the round 4 belting by Norwood.
  • According to the best players named in the Sunday paper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1983 season were Stephen Kernahan, David Marshall, Tony McGuinness, Chris McDermott, Peter Carey & Tony Symonds.

1991 Season Summary

1991 season chart

In 1991, the Adelaide Crows entered the AFL, which had a profound impact on the SANFL, and on Glenelg in particular. Woodville & West Torrens merged to form the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles, and the SANFL's push for ground rationalisation encouraged Glenelg to play their home games at Football Park.

Glenelg were decimated by the formation of the Adelaide Crows as they supplied the Crows with their Coach (Graham Cornes), Captain (Chris McDermott), Top Goalkicker (Rod Jameson), 7 other other players (David Marshall, Robbie Thompson, Clayton Lamb, Matthew Liptak, Michael Murphy, Paul Rouvray, Allan Bartlett), as well as their fitness director (Trevor Jaques), and property steward (Rex Leahy). In addition Peter Maynard moved to the new W-WT Eagles, and John Fidge missed the first half of the season seeking an AFL lifeline at Essendon.

Kym Hodgeman was appointed the new Glenelg coach, and Scott Salisbury was appointed captain.

In a remarkably resilient performance considering the circumstances, Glenelg won 6 of their first 9 games, and were 3 games clear of 6th placed Centrals after round 10. But in the 2nd half of the season they fell away, only winning 4 of their last 13 games.

After round 18, with 6 matches remaining, Glenelg were in 5th place, 2 wins and percentage in front of West in 6th.
But they lost 5 of their last 6 games, including a season defining 35 point loss to an improving West Adelaide in round 20 which finally tipped them out of the top 5 for good, as well as losses to Norwood and Centrals, both of whom finished below Glenelg on the ladder. They eventually finished in 6th spot, two games out of the top five, with 10 wins & 12 losses.

  • Nick Chigwidden won the club's best & fairest award.
  • Mark Russell was the club's top goalkicker with 50 goals.
  • According to the best players named in the newspaper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1991 season were Nick Chigwidden, Darren Mansell & Simon Hele.
  • John Fidge kicked 11.1 in a match against Centrals in round 16 - in a match where Glenelg trailed by 51 points at the 15min mark of the third quarter, until Fidge booted 8 goals in the next 46 minutes, to get Glenelg over the line by 6 points.
  • John Seebohm became the 5th Glenelg player to play 300 league games - after Graham Cornes, Peter Carey, John MacFarlane, & David Marshall.

1995 Season Summary

1995 season chart

Glenelg got off to a sensational start to the 1995 season by belting the previous season's premiers, Port Adelaide, by 92-points at Football Park in the opening round, and continued to roll merrily along for the next 7 rounds.
After 8 rounds, Glenelg were sitting in 3rd place on the ladder with a 5—2 record, having only lost to 2nd ranked Centrals and 4th ranked Norwood, and had thrashed top side Port, as well as thrashing winless Srurt by a record 145-point margin.

But then things rapidly fell apart for Glenelg... They lost their next 6 games in a row, including an 89-point loss to Norwood in round 11, followed by a catastrophic 101-point loss to 2nd-bottom Woodville-West Torrens at Whyalla in round 12 (a team who had only won 2 games previously).

From round 9 onwards Glenelg lost 12 of their last 15 matches of the season with their only credit worthy win coming against eventual premier Port Adelaide by 10-points in round 19 - their only other two wins in this period were both against bottom side Sturt who failed to win a game for the entire season.

Despite all this, and because of their good start to the season, that round 19 win against Port still kept them in finals contention, as with 5 rounds remaining they were only 2 games from 5th place.
In round 20, once again fighting to keep their finals chances alive against 2nd placed Norwood at Norwood, they put in a good showing, and were 10 points up half-way through the last quarter, but got run-down by Norwood and lost by 6-points.
Glenelg's faint finals hopes were extinguished the following round by another poor performance against 2nd-bottom Woodville-West Torrens, and they eventually finished the season in 7th place with 8 wins - 14 losses, 3.5 wins outside the top-5.

  • Tony Symonds was appointed coach for the 1995 season.
  • Nick Chigwidden continued as captain for a 3rd successive season.
  • Dean Bailey won Glenelg's best & fairest award.
  • James West was Glenelg's top goalkicker with 49 goals for the season.
  • According to the best players named in the newspaper each week, Glenelg's best players in the 1995 season were Phil McGuinness, Dean Bailey & Nick Chigwidden.
